Tennessee Medicare Supplement Plans

Medicare Supplemental Insurance, or “Medigap insurance,” helps residents covered by Medicare “fill in the gaps” that Medicare Parts A and B may leave. There are over 164,000 people in Tennessee with Medigap coverage. Tennessee residents must have both Medicare Parts A and B in order to qualify for Medigap. Premiums usually go up for Medigap policies the older a person is, so it’s smart to enroll in Part B and apply for Medigap as soon as a person turns 65.

When to Enroll

After a person turns 65 and enrolls in Medicare Part B, there is a six month open enrollment period where a person cannot be denied for any Medigap plan. However, if a person has a pre-existing condition, a six-month waiting period may be enforced. It’s critical to enroll during this open period so Tennessee residents should plan ahead when turning 65. Open enrollment can mean an easier process and potentially lower premiums. Medicare Advantage

Some Tennessee residents prefer to enroll in Medicare Advantage for extra coverage including vision, hearing, dental, and/or wellness programs. Medicare Advantage is sometimes called Medicare Part C, and works by replacing Parts A and B of traditional Medicare. Some Medicare Advantage programs include prescription drug coverage, however, unlike traditional Medicare users, Medicare Advantage recipients can only see doctors within preferred networks. This limits your options of providers, but allows you to choose your specific caregivers.

Extra Help Programs

Medicare Part D is the Low Income Subsidy (LIS) program intended for residents who have both Parts A and B and qualify as low-income. If a person is receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Medicaid, that person is automatically qualified for Part D. Income guidelines in Tennessee are $16,775 for an individual or $22,695 for a couple.
